It is the variation in morphological or behavioral traits among individuals of a species that is repeatable over the long term. This variation is important for a species in numerous ways. Due to such variation, species can adapt to new environmental conditions when the current environment changes. They can also adapt to new niches to reduce competition and rely on alternative sources of food, shelter, or other necessities. Furthermore, variation allows for choosiness in decision-making, which directly impacts mate choice and, consequently, the flow of alleles within the population.
