Sexual selection refers to the preference for certain traits over others by members of a species when choosing a mate. Over time, this process can drive the evolution of species in a certain direction making specific traits more prominent in the population with compared to favored traits, and even contribute to speciation. Sexual selection can occur through various mechanisms and for diverse reasons, giving rise to multiple models that explain its dynamics and outcomes. 1. Fisherian Runaway Selection This model suggests that certain traits become exaggerated in a population due to a feedback loop of female preference and male trait inheritance. Example: Bright plumage in peacocks. Females prefer males with elaborate feathers, which lead to the evolution of even more elaborate feathers in future generations.   It is the variation in morphological or behavioral traits among individuals of a species that is repeatable over the long term. This variation is important for a species in numerous ways. Due to such variation, species can adapt to new environmental conditions when the current environment changes. They can also adapt to new niches to reduce competition and rely on alternative sources of food, shelter, or other necessities. Furthermore, variation allows for choosiness in decision-making, which directly impacts mate choice and, consequently, the flow of alleles within the population.
